If you’ve been watching fuel prices lately, you’ve probably noticed that they can change quickly—sometimes even from one day to the next.

Whether you’re filling your car with gasoline, ordering heating oil or having propane delivered to your home, changing energy prices can leave you wondering: Why does the price of fuel fluctuate so much, and who determines what I pay?

The answer is more complicated than you might think. The price you pay for heating fuel is influenced by a much larger energy market, with factors ranging from global supply and demand to weather, inventories and transportation.

Understanding how that system works can help explain why prices sometimes change so quickly.

Heating Oil Prices Start with the Global Oil Market

Heating oil is a petroleum product made from crude oil, so the cost of crude is one of the major factors affecting the price of heating oil.

Crude oil is traded in a global marketplace. Its price can move based on worldwide supply and demand, geopolitical events, production decisions, economic conditions, weather and concerns about potential disruptions to the world’s oil supply.

That means an event thousands of miles away can eventually affect the wholesale cost of heating oil here in New England.

But crude oil is only part of the equation.

Before heating oil reaches your home, crude oil must be refined into usable products. The finished fuel then has to be transported, stored and distributed before being delivered by truck to individual homes and businesses.

Each step is part of the final cost of a gallon of heating oil.

Why Can Heating Oil Prices Change So Quickly?

Energy markets don’t stand still.

A change in crude-oil prices, refinery capacity, inventories or available supply can affect wholesale heating-oil prices. Seasonal demand matters, too.

Here in New England, heating-oil demand increases significantly during the colder months. If extremely cold weather causes demand to rise quickly at the same time inventories are tightening, the market can respond with higher prices.

Transportation and supply disruptions can also affect regional prices. Because the Northeast relies on fuel moving through a network of refineries, terminals, pipelines, ships, barges, rail and trucks, disruptions anywhere along that chain can influence the cost and availability of supply.

What About Propane?

Propane prices are influenced by some of the same forces, but the propane market works somewhat differently from heating oil.

Propane is produced through both natural-gas processing and crude-oil refining. Its price can therefore be influenced by conditions in both energy markets.

Supply and demand are particularly important.

Propane production is relatively consistent throughout the year, while residential demand is highly seasonal. Inventories are typically built during warmer months and drawn down as demand increases during fall and winter. For homeowners, knowing how much propane is left in your tank can be especially important during periods of increased winter demand.

A prolonged stretch of very cold weather can increase propane consumption quickly. If demand rises faster than available supplies can respond, wholesale prices can increase.

Transportation matters as well. New England is relatively far from many of the country’s major propane supply sources, so the cost and availability of moving propane into the region can affect what local suppliers pay.

From the Energy Market to Your Home

Although we often talk about “the price of heating oil” or “the price of propane,” there isn’t one person or company setting a single price.

Think of it more like a chain:

Global and domestic energy markets → wholesale fuel costs → transportation and storage → local fuel supplier → delivery to your home

When costs earlier in that chain change, those changes eventually work their way through the market.

That’s also why different fuel companies may adjust their prices around the same time. Local dealers are purchasing product within the same broader wholesale marketplace.

Why Does the Price Sometimes Change From One Day to the Next?

Wholesale energy markets can move daily.

Sometimes the movement is relatively small. During periods of uncertainty or significant market disruption, prices can move much more rapidly.

Fuel suppliers must purchase new product continually throughout the heating season. As the wholesale cost of replacement fuel changes, retail prices can change as well.

This is one reason the price you hear today may not necessarily be the same price available days or weeks later.

What Can Proulx Control?

At Proulx Oil & Propane, we can’t control the global energy markets, geopolitical events, the weather or the wholesale price of fuel.

What we can control is how we take care of our customers.

That means maintaining dependable fuel supply, making reliable deliveries, offering Automatic Delivery to help customers avoid running out of fuel, providing 24-hour emergency service and having a local team available when our customers need us. Safety is also an important part of being a propane homeowner, including knowing what propane smells like and what to do if you smell it.

We’ve been serving families and businesses throughout New Hampshire, Southern Maine and northeastern Massachusetts since 1944. During that time, energy markets have changed many times.

Our responsibility remains the same: to monitor those markets carefully, plan for the heating season and provide the dependable local service our customers count on.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heating Oil and Propane Prices

Why does the price of heating oil change?
Heating oil prices are influenced by the cost of crude oil, refining, supply and demand, inventories, transportation and seasonal weather conditions. Because many of these factors can change quickly, wholesale and retail heating oil prices can change quickly as well.

Does the price of crude oil affect heating oil prices?
Yes. Heating oil is produced from crude oil, so crude-oil prices are an important component of heating-oil prices. However, refining, transportation, inventories and regional supply and demand also affect the price consumers ultimately pay.

Does crude oil affect propane prices too?
It can, but propane pricing works differently. Propane is produced from both natural-gas processing and crude-oil refining. Propane prices can be affected by supply and demand, inventories, weather, transportation and conditions in both the natural-gas and crude-oil markets.

Why can fuel prices change from one day to the next?
Wholesale energy markets change continually. Fuel suppliers regularly purchase replacement product, so changes in wholesale costs can eventually affect retail prices.

Why are heating fuel prices sometimes different from one company to another?
Fuel companies may purchase product at different times and from different suppliers, and their transportation, storage, delivery and operating costs can vary. However, local fuel dealers are generally operating within the same broader wholesale energy market.

Have Questions About Heating Oil or Propane?

Fuel markets can be complicated, and prices can change quickly. If you have questions about your heating oil or propane service, contact the Proulx Oil & Propane team. If you’re comparing propane providers, you may also have questions about what happens to your propane tank when you switch companies.

We’re always happy to help you understand your account, your fuel service and the options currently available to you.

If your home uses propane, knowing how much fuel is left in your tank can help you avoid an unexpected runout. Fortunately, checking your propane level is easy once you know where to look and what the numbers on your tank gauge mean.

Whether you use propane for home heating, hot water, cooking, a fireplace, or several appliances, here’s what every homeowner should know about monitoring their propane supply.

How Do I Check the Propane Level in My Tank?

Most residential propane tanks have a gauge located under the tank’s protective dome or lid.

When you lift the lid, look for a small round dial with numbers typically ranging from 5 to 95. These numbers represent the percentage of propane in your tank — not the number of gallons remaining.

For example, if the gauge reads 50%, your tank is approximately half full.

To estimate how many gallons of propane you have remaining, multiply your tank’s water capacity by the percentage shown on the gauge.

For a typical 500-gallon propane tank:

80% = approximately 400 gallons

60% = approximately 300 gallons

40% = approximately 200 gallons

30% = approximately 150 gallons

20% = approximately 100 gallons

These figures are estimates, but they can give you a good idea of how much propane remains in your tank.

Why Is My Propane Tank Only Filled to 80%?

If you’ve just received a propane delivery and your gauge reads around 80%, don’t worry — your tank isn’t short on propane.

Residential propane tanks are generally filled to approximately 80% of their total capacity to allow room for propane to expand as temperatures change.

That means a 500-gallon propane tank will typically hold approximately 400 gallons of propane when considered full.

The extra space inside the tank is an important part of the propane system’s safe operation.

When Should I Order More Propane?

If you’re a will-call customer who monitors and orders your own propane, don’t wait until the tank is nearly empty before requesting a delivery.

A good rule of thumb is to contact your propane provider when your gauge reaches approximately 30%.

Ordering at 30% provides a reasonable cushion for scheduling your delivery, particularly during periods of heavy demand or extremely cold weather when propane consumption can increase significantly.

Remember that your propane usage isn’t always consistent. A tank that lasts for weeks during mild fall weather can drop much faster during a stretch of very cold New England temperatures.

How Quickly Will My Propane Level Drop?

There isn’t one answer because every household uses propane differently.

Your propane consumption can be affected by:

Outdoor temperatures

Size and insulation of your home

Number of people living in the home

Number and type of propane appliances

Thermostat settings

Hot water usage

Whether propane is your primary heating source

Use of fireplaces, generators, pool heaters, or other propane equipment

This is why simply knowing the size of your propane tank doesn’t tell you how long your supply will last.

A 500-gallon tank serving a home that uses propane only for cooking and hot water will behave very differently from a 500-gallon tank supplying heat, hot water, cooking, and other appliances.

What Happens If My Propane Tank Runs Out?

Running out of propane is more than an inconvenience.

If your propane supply is interrupted, certain safety procedures may be required before your propane system can be placed back into service. For this reason, homeowners should never intentionally allow a propane tank to run empty.

If you do run out of propane, contact your propane provider. Do not attempt to restore service or relight appliances unless you have been instructed that it is safe to do so.

And if you ever smell propane — commonly described as an odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur — leave the area immediately and follow propane safety procedures.

What Is Automatic Propane Delivery?

For homeowners who don’t want to continually monitor their tank gauge, automatic delivery can make managing propane much easier.

With automatic delivery, your propane provider estimates when you’ll need fuel based on factors such as your previous usage and weather conditions and schedules deliveries accordingly.

At Proulx Oil & Propane, automatic delivery helps take the guesswork out of monitoring your propane supply and remembering when it’s time to call.

Even with automatic delivery, it’s still a good idea to know where your tank gauge is located and how to read it.

Can I Check My Propane Tank Myself?

Yes. Checking the gauge is a simple visual inspection and something every propane homeowner should know how to do.

Lift the tank’s protective lid, locate the gauge, and note the percentage shown.

You should not attempt to adjust valves, regulators, fittings, or other propane system components yourself. If something doesn’t look right or you have questions about your propane system, contact a qualified propane professional.

Propane Tank Gauge FAQs

Does 50% mean my propane tank is half full?

Yes. The gauge displays the approximate percentage of propane remaining in the tank. A 50% reading means the tank is approximately half full.

Why doesn’t my propane gauge ever read 100%?

Propane tanks need room for the liquid propane inside to expand as temperatures change. That’s why a properly filled residential propane tank generally reads around 80% rather than 100%.

At what percentage should I order propane?

Will-call customers should generally consider requesting a delivery at approximately 30%, rather than waiting until the tank is nearly empty.

Is the propane tank gauge exact?

No. The gauge provides an approximate indication of the propane level and should be used as a general guide rather than a precise measurement of gallons remaining.

What should I do if my propane gauge is very low?

Contact your propane provider as soon as possible. Avoid waiting until the tank is completely empty.

Take the Guesswork Out of Your Propane Supply

Knowing how to read your propane tank gauge is a simple but important part of being a propane homeowner.

Check your tank periodically, especially during periods of very cold weather when propane consumption can increase. If you prefer not to worry about monitoring your tank and scheduling deliveries yourself, ask about automatic propane delivery.

It’s one of the most common questions homeowners ask, especially those who are new to propane.

Knowing what propane smells like—and what to do if you detect that odor—is an important part of keeping your home and family safe.

What Does Propane Smell Like?

Interestingly, propane has no natural odor. For safety, propane suppliers add a harmless odorant called ethyl mercaptan, which gives propane its distinctive smell.

Most people describe propane as smelling like:

Rotten eggs

Sulfur

The odor is intentionally strong so you can quickly recognize a possible propane leak.

Why Does Propane Have a Smell?

Since propane is naturally odorless, the added odorant acts as an early warning system.

If propane escapes from a tank, gas line, or appliance, the smell alerts you that there may be a leak long before propane reaches dangerous levels.

This safety feature has helped protect homeowners for decades.

Many customers notice a slight propane odor for a short time after a delivery.

This can happen because a very small amount of propane vapor may escape when the delivery hose is disconnected. The smell should dissipate quickly outdoors.

Cold weather doesn’t change the odor itself, but wind direction, humidity, and air movement can affect how the smell travels.

Thinking about switching propane companies, but worried about what will happen to your propane tank?

You are not alone. Many homeowners assume that changing propane providers means their tank must be removed, replaced or—even worse—dug out of the ground.

Fortunately, switching propane companies is usually much easier than people expect.

At Proulx Oil & Propane, we help homeowners make the transition with as little disruption as possible. What happens to your tank depends primarily on whether it is installed above ground or underground.

Can One Propane Company Fill Another Company’s Tank?

The answer is no.

Most residential propane tanks are owned by the propane company supplying the fuel. Because the tank belongs to that provider, another propane company cannot simply begin filling it.

That means some type of tank transition is usually required when you switch companies.

However, the process is handled differently for above-ground and underground propane tanks. Have questions about propane tanks? Visit our Propane Tank FAQs.

What Happens to an Above-Ground Propane Tank?

If your current propane company owns an above-ground tank, that tank will normally be removed and replaced with a Proulx tank. Our team coordinates the tank installation and works to make the changeover as smooth as possible.

Before the new tank is placed, we will evaluate:

The current tank location

Tank size and household propane usage

Access for delivery and service vehicles

Required clearances and safety considerations

The condition of the existing propane system

Once the new tank is installed, the propane system must be inspected and tested before service begins.

Our goal is to complete the transition safely while minimizing any interruption to your propane service.

Does an Underground Propane Tank Need to Be Dug Up?

In most cases, no.

This is one of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners.

If you have an underground propane tank, switching companies does not automatically mean that the tank must be excavated and removed.

Instead, propane companies can often arrange for the ownership of the underground tank to be transferred from one company to another. Proulx may purchase the existing tank from your current propane provider, allowing the tank to remain safely underground.

That means:

No major excavation

No torn-up lawn

No need to remove an otherwise usable tank

Less disruption for the homeowner

The details depend on the tank, its condition, its ownership and the cooperation of the current propane provider. Our team will review the situation and explain the available options before any work is scheduled.

What If the Current Company Will Not Sell the Underground Tank?

Every situation is different.

If the current propane company does not agree to transfer ownership, other options may need to be considered. Proulx will evaluate the tank installation and discuss the most practical solution with the homeowner.

The important thing to remember is that you should not assume an underground tank must be dug up simply because you want to change propane providers.

Start by speaking with us. We can investigate the tank ownership and determine what options are available.

Will I Be Without Propane During the Switch?

Our team works to coordinate the transition so that interruption is kept to a minimum.

The exact timing depends on factors such as:

The type and size of the tank

The amount of propane remaining

Scheduling and site access

Tank ownership arrangements

Required safety inspections

Weather and ground conditions

This is one reason summer can be an ideal time to switch propane companies. Homeowners are typically using less propane, scheduling is often more flexible and there is more time to complete the transition before heating season begins.

What Happens to the Propane Left in My Old Tank?

The handling of any remaining propane depends on the current provider and the tank arrangement.

Before switching, ask your current propane company how they handle unused propane and whether any credits, removal fees or account charges apply.

Proulx can also help explain what questions to ask so there are fewer surprises during the transition.

Is There a Cost to Switch Propane Companies?

The cost can vary depending on the property, tank type, installation and propane system.

At Proulx, we evaluate the existing setup before recommending the best course of action. This allows us to identify any installation or safety requirements and provide clear information before the switch is completed.

Homeowners should also review their current provider’s terms for possible tank removal, account closure or early termination charges.

Why Switch Propane Companies During the Summer?

Summer gives homeowners time to make a thoughtful decision without the pressure of cold weather or an urgent heating need.

Switching before fall may provide:

More flexible scheduling

Easier access to outdoor tanks

Time to complete inspections and installation work

Less concern about interrupting heating service

An opportunity to prepare before the busiest heating months

Even if you are not ready to switch immediately, summer is a good time to start asking questions and learning about your options.

Thinking About Switching to Proulx?

Changing propane companies may sound complicated, but it does not have to be.

If you have an above-ground tank, we can explain the tank replacement process. If you have an underground propane tank, we can investigate whether the existing tank can remain in place through a tank ownership transfer.

Proulx Oil & Propane has served homeowners throughout New Hampshire, Southern Maine and Northern Massachusetts for more than 80 years. Our local team is here to answer your questions and help make the transition as straightforward as possible.

Whether you’re grilling on the deck, relaxing around the fire pit, or heading out in your RV, propane helps power many of the activities that make summer special.

Most people think of propane for home heating, but it offers so much more. Here are just a few ways propane can make your summer more enjoyable.

1. Backyard Grilling

Nothing says summer quite like cooking outdoors.

Propane grills heat quickly, offer precise temperature control, and make everything from burgers and hot dogs to seafood and vegetables easy to prepare.

Tip: Before your first cookout of the season, inspect your grill hose for cracks and perform a quick soap-and-water leak test on the connections.

Outdoor kitchens continue to grow in popularity, allowing homeowners to cook, entertain, and spend more time outside.

Many outdoor kitchen appliances—including built-in grills, side burners, pizza ovens, and refrigerators—can be integrated into a propane system for dependable performance.

As the sun goes down, a propane fire pit creates the perfect gathering place for family and friends.

Unlike wood fires, propane fire pits start instantly, produce no smoke, and require virtually no cleanup—making them ideal for cool summer evenings.

New England summers are short enough without waiting for the pool to warm up.

Propane pool and spa heaters can extend your swimming season by keeping water at a comfortable temperature, even on cooler mornings or evenings.

This past winter was a challenging one for many homeowners across New Hampshire and Southern Maine. Between rising fuel costs, delivery delays, and long wait times just to reach someone on the phone, a lot of people were left frustrated when they needed help the most.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

But what many homeowners don’t realize is this:
the best time to switch propane providers isn’t during the winter—it’s right now.

What This Winter Taught a Lot of Homeowners

Over the past few months, we’ve heard the same concerns again and again from homeowners:

Long hold times when calling for help

Delayed or unpredictable deliveries

Running low on fuel during cold stretches

Feeling like just another account instead of a valued customer

These issues tend to show up when demand is at its highest—right when you need reliable service the most.

So why does this keep happening—and what can you do about it?

Why Summer Is the Best Time to Switch Propane Providers

It might seem counterintuitive, but spring and summer are actually the easiest—and smartest—time to make a change.

Here’s why:

No urgency or pressure

You’re not dealing with freezing temperatures or an empty tank. That means you have time to make a thoughtful decision.

Easier scheduling

Installations, tank swaps, and service work are much easier to schedule during the off-season.

Avoid the winter rush

By switching now, everything is in place before the cold weather returns.

Peace of mind

You go into next winter knowing your fuel provider is already set—and ready.

Switching Is Easier Than Most People Think

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that switching propane providers is complicated.

In reality, the process is often simple—and in many cases, free to switch.

At Proulx Oil & Propane, we handle the details and walk you through the process step by step. Our goal is to make the transition smooth, with little to no disruption to your home.

What to Look for in a Fuel Provider

If you’re considering a change, here are a few things that matter most:

Local customer service – Real people who answer the phone and know the area

Reliable delivery – Especially during peak winter demand

Clear communication – So you’re never left wondering what’s going on

No gimmicks – Straightforward pricing and dependable service

Choosing the right provider isn’t just about price—it’s about peace of mind when it matters most.

Don’t Wait Until Next Winter to Think About It

It’s easy to put this off once the weather warms up. But by the time winter comes back around, options can feel limited—and decisions become more urgent.

If this past winter left you frustrated, now’s the easiest time to make a change—before the next heating season.

If you’ve lived through a New Hampshire winter, you already understand something the rest of the country sometimes forgets: when temperatures drop, reliable heat is not a luxury. It is safety, comfort, and continuity for families, schools, and businesses.

That’s why the propane and HVAC trades remain a strong career path nationwide—and why local companies like Proulx Oil & Propane continue investing in the people who keep our communities running.

The skilled trades are growing, and HVAC is leading the way

Across the U.S., demand for trained heating and service professionals continues to rise. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 8% job growth for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers from 2024 to 2034, which is faster than average.

For anyone considering a hands-on career (or looking for a better long-term fit in the trades), that outlook matters. Growth typically means more openings, better mobility, and an industry that rewards skill, licensing, and strong work habits.

Propane is not just a fuel—it’s an essential service

Propane work is unique because it combines technical skill with a public-facing responsibility: you are providing an essential service people depend on daily, especially in winter.

The propane industry needs professionals in many roles—service technicians, delivery drivers, customer support, and operations—and it continues building training pipelines to attract and retain talent.

In short: the industry is not standing still. It is actively developing career pathways and modern training to bring the next generation into the field.

Training and safety standards are evolving for the better

One of the strongest signals that propane is a “career industry” is how much emphasis is placed on structured training and safety culture.

Starting in 2025, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) began transitioning to the PERC Education Program (PEP), which is designed to modernize and standardize propane workforce education and replace the long-running CETP framework over time.

For technicians and drivers, this is good news. It means clearer development paths, stronger fundamentals, and an industry-wide commitment to doing the job the right way—every time.

Why a local, family-owned company is a different kind of workplace

Big brands can promise “scale.” Local companies deliver something else: relationships, accountability, and pride of workmanship.

At Proulx, being family-owned and locally rooted isn’t a slogan—it shapes daily decisions:

Customers are neighbors. You see the same streets, towns, and households year after year.

Your work is visible. When a system is running safely, you helped make that happen.

Service is personal. You’re not a ticket number in a queue; you’re part of a team people recognize and trust.

And in a region like ours—where winter conditions can change quickly—local knowledge matters. You know the roads, the terrain, and the real-world needs of homes and businesses in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.

What makes propane/HVAC careers appealing right now

If you’re weighing career options (or you’re already a technician looking for a better fit), the appeal of this work is straightforward:

1) Work that matters
Keeping heat on, hot water flowing, and systems operating safely is meaningful, especially during winter.

2) A clear skills ladder
In this field, your skills—and your reputation—compound over time. The more you learn, the more valuable you become.

3) Long-term stability
People will always need heat, maintenance, safe installations, and dependable service. The national outlook for HVAC roles supports that stability.

4) Pride and professionalism
For many technicians, the best part of the job is simple: doing it right, solving problems, and being trusted.

Industry pride is real—and it’s earned

The propane industry talks a lot about reliability because it has to live up to it. Whether you’re delivering fuel, servicing equipment, responding to a no-heat call, or helping a customer understand their system, this work demands professionalism.

That’s also why we view recruiting as more than “filling a position.” It’s about building a team with the skills—and mindset—to represent our company well and serve our communities safely.

Considering a career move?

If you’re an experienced HVAC or fuel technician—or someone who takes pride in hands-on work and wants a stable, respected trade—this is a strong time to explore opportunities in the propane and HVAC service field.

At Proulx Oil & Propane, we’re proud of our longevity, our local roots, and the role we play in keeping our region comfortable through every season. If you’re looking for a team where your work is valued and your reputation matters, we’d like to connect.

As temperatures drop across the region, now is the perfect time to check a few important items off your seasonal to-do list. These quick reminders will help ensure your home heats safely and efficiently all winter long.

DELIVERY & TANK ACCESS

Please clear driveways and pathways to propane tanks and oil fill pipes.

Salt & sand to avoid icy driveways so our trucks can safely deliver.

Mark your underground tank with a brightly colored flag or stake.

Sign up for Automatic Delivery. If you’re still checking your gauge and calling for fuel, this is the season to switch. Automatic Delivery helps prevent runouts and keeps your home warm without the guesswork.

SAFETY REMINDERS

Blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. After each storm, check for drifting snow around vents and exhaust pipes.

Check your CO & Smoke Detectors. Cold weather means your heating system is working harder. Make sure alarms are installed, functioning, and have fresh batteries.

Know the location of your propane tank’s emergency shut-off valve and how to turn it off in case of an emergency. If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas supply, leave the building and immediately call 911 and Proulx.

Have us install a free Remote Tank Monitor. For added peace of mind, our tank monitor service keeps an eye on your fuel level 24/7 and alerts us when it’s time for a delivery.

Designate someone to monitor your home while you are away.

WINTER WEATHER PREP CHECKLIST

Before a winter storm hits:

Charge all devices and backup batteries

Have flashlights with extra batteries ready.

Snowmelt, sand or kitty litter for icy steps.

Have portable chargers, power banks, or a generator ready. If using a portable generator be sure to: Never run indoors or in a garage, ensure it is far from windows or vents to avoid CO buildup and check oil and fuel levels before a storm.

Keep a roof rake on hand to safely remove heavy snow from roofs to prevent ice dams.

Open under-sink cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate.

Stock up on essentials-yes, that means bread & milk!

Blankets & extra layers ready.

Medications refilled ahead of time.

Make sure pets have a warm space.

Proudly Serving Our Local Communities Since 1944. We’re your established, family-owned energy partner—here for you in every season.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent and dangerous hazard that can affect anyone-homeowners, tenants, guests, and technicians alike. Awareness of CO sources, risks, and prevention is essential to ensure safety in any environment where fuel-burning appliances are used.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels. It is highly toxic to humans and animals, with exposure capable of causing serious health issues or even death.

SOURCES AND PREVENTION

Common sources of CO include heating appliances, fireplaces, and cooking equipment. Preventing CO exposure begins with proper maintenance and awareness:

Ensure all venting for heating equipment is clear of obstructions such as snow, vegetation, fencing, or landscaping.

Install and regularly test carbon monoxide detectors in homes and buildings.

Use gas grills outdoors only, never in garages or enclosed porches.

If you use propane-fueled appliances in your home, it’s important to understand how carbon monoxide can form. The propane industry’s official safety authority — the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) — provides detailed guidance on propane safety, carbon monoxide prevention, and how to keep your home protected.

HEALTH EFFECTS

CO exposure affects the body differently depending on concentration:

10-25 PPM: Long-term exposure can have lasting health effects. (PPM/Parts Per Million)

100-200 PPM: May cause dizziness, headaches, and nausea.

Higher levels: Can lead to unconsciousness or death if untreated.

Treatment for CO poisoning ranges from moving the affected individual to fresh air, administering oxygen, or in severe cases, treatment in a hyperbaric chamber at specialized facilities. Immediate assistance should be sought through 911 or poison control.

TOOLS FOR SAFETY

For added protection, homeowners can purchase online or at their local home improvement store a Carbon Monoxide Detector. There are a variety of units with some offering a combination Propane, Methane, Butane, and Carbon Monoxide. These are easy to use just a110V plug in.

By understanding the risks, following proper safety procedures, and using the right tools, CO exposure can be effectively prevented-helping ensure a safe environment for both homeowners and the professionals who service their equipment.
